As the seasons change and frosty mornings return, it’s time to think about preparing your caravan for winter. If you’re not planning to use your caravan over the colder months, it’s essential to drain it down properly and take a few precautions to prevent frost damage and keep it in great condition.

Here are some things you should consider:

• Drain the water system – Turn off the water at the pump, open all taps and drain valves, remove any drainage plugs, and flush the toilet.
• Leave all taps open to allow any remaining moisture to escape.
• Remove the showerhead and shake out any excess water. Leave the shower head in the shower tray to allow water to drain.
• Empty and dry any portable water carriers like an aquaroll
• Drain and clean the cassette toilet thoroughly, flushing through with clean water and empty.
• Clean the caravan thoroughly inside to remove dirt, dust, and crumbs that could attract pests or cause unpleasant odours over winter.
• Clean the exterior and consider applying specialised caravan products to help protect the surface from winter weather. We can offer this service for customers who have their caravan stored with us, please just ask at reception.
• Turn off electricity supply.
• Take out electronics that may be sensitive to cold temperatures.
• Disconnect the gas bottle and turn it off. We recommend removing gas bottles and taking them home for safe, outdoor storage.
• Remove the leisure battery and take it home. Charge it periodically (every 6 weeks) to prevent long-term damage from discharging.
• Remove all food items to avoid attracting vermin.
• Remove bedding and soft furnishings to prevent mildew and deter pests.
• Ensure floor vents are clear for ventilation and use moisture absorbers to prevent mould and dampness.
• Leave the fridge door slightly open on the catch.
• Close all rooflights and windows securely.
• Ensure security locks are on – we recommend a wheel lock and a hitch lock. Apply a silicone spray to locks to avoid them ceasing (available at reception).
• Remove any wet or damp awnings and take these home.
• Check your caravan handbook for any additional manufacturer-specific winterisation advice.
